"A curse on those who are lax in doing the LORD's work! A curse on those who keep their swords from bloodshed!"

- Jeremiah 48:10

CANON WORLD OVERVIEW
The world of Hellsing is very much like the real world of late twentieth century Earth but with some imaginary things in it. Most notably: Dracula is not a work of pure fiction (though certain liberties were taken with the ending); the Catholic Church never really ended the Inquisition, continues to hold military power, and dabbles in biotechnology; and the Third Reich's forays into mad science went further than anyone could have ever dreamed. Of course, it's not like the average person on the street knew about of any this, or at least not before everything hit in the fan when the previously mentioned Nazis tried starting World War III. With vampires.
CHARACTER BACKGROUND
Like many in Hellsing's cast not much is disclosed about Yumie's past during the series. We do know she was raised in St. Ferdinand's, a Catholic orphanage near Rome, under the care and teachings of the best warrior the Vatican had to offer. Based on the fact that she ended up in a church-run orphanage, we can surmise her biological parents are probably deceased, that she likely had no living relatives, and guess that her family would have probably been Catholic themselves.

As an adult she went on to become a nun and top agent of the same organization as her mentor, Section XIII: Iscariot, the Vatican's super-secret black ops program made up of priests and nuns charged with various unsavory duties such as assassination, oppressing pagans, hunting monsters, and exorcism. Since the two other significant Iscariot characters in the series were raised in the same facility as Yumie it is not improbable to suggest it served as a training ground where future members of the organization may have received combat training and religious indoctrination from an early age.
PERSONALITY
In short: Proud, loyal, impulsive, excitable, emotional, righteous. Always ready to FIGHT.

As stated above, Yumie is an agent of the Iscariot organization and it's worth discussing Iscariot briefly in this section as well because of the profound way the group's ideals both shape and reflect its members, including Yumie. Most importantly, Iscariots are people who do their church's dirty work, even if it means committing mortal sins and damning themselves to Hell. And they accept this. They're proud of of it. In other words, they're capable of reprehensible behavior (killing people, betrayal, blowing up buildings, etc.) if they perceive it as ultimately being for a good cause.

As might be expected from someone pledged so entirely to their church, Yumie is deeply religious to the point of fanaticism. She believes her religion beautiful and perfect, superior to all others and regards non-Catholics as heretics undeserving of life. She will kill for her faith and displays a complete lack of remorse in doing so: quite the opposite, she enjoys it. She has a particular and deeply ingrained sense of justice and order, but a disregard for secular laws. It isn't Man's authority that is truly important, after all, but God's, and it is only God's punishment or forgiveness that she believes has any real value.

Iscariot are proud folks and Yumie is no exception. She carries herself with a confidence in her mission and her own abilities, however, she shows a tendency to crack when things go wildly off plan, such as when Anderson had the Iscariots deviate from orders, and her shock and horror over the events of the Nail Arc. Another weakness is her temper, which can be explosive and even reach levels of uncontrollable rage and berserker-like behavior. She's an excitable, emotional person, and her judgment suffers because of this.

There is also a softer, more fragile side of her we get a glimpse of, the lost, child-like expression on her face at her mentor's defeat speaks volumes, as does her posture of utter despair during his final words. Her surrogate family mean a lot to her, and she'll put herself directly into the line of fire for them and to defend their honor. But this isn't to say she won't question their actions or snark at them for it, as she does several times.

NOTE: A prototype version of this character appeared in a different series from the mangaka, Crossfire, where she had an alternate personality named Yumiko. However, since word of the author is that the two series are separate canons, and Yumiko never appears or is mentioned in Hellsing proper (even the OVA, which tweaked and expanded several things from the manga and could have easily slipped in a reference, did not do so), I have chosen to play Yumie as a single, integrated personality. In fact, I feel the version of Yumie we see in Hellsing is like a combination of the two Takagi personalities of Crossfire, a hot-tempered assassin with an emotional side and a nearly comical tendency to occasionally flail. (Though I may use some non-conflicting aspects from the other series to help flesh things out here and there.)
SKILLS/ABILITIES
Yumie demonstrates the following in canon. How is never explained. (Hellsing is a series full of people who can do strange things with no explanation, tbh.)

★ Swordmanship - Yumie is supremely effective with her katana. Her method can be described as a quick draw style that focuses on speed and raw brute strength to hack and slash through targets rather than more finessed technique.
★ Super Speed and Reflexes - Extremely fast to the point of moving as a blur at times and able to dodge bullets.
★ Unusual Strength - Strong enough to cut through crowds of vampires and familiars without tiring and readily capable of smashing men's heads into walls with her bare hands.
★ Capable of leaping from a multistory building to a safe landing without blinking.
